Tomás Veloz González

Tomas Veloz is the director of the Systemic Modelling and Applications group at CLEA, Vrije Universiteit Brussels, and is associate professor at UTEM, Chile. He has a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies and an MSc in computer sciences, with majors in mathematics and physics. His research focuses on interdisciplinary mathematical modelling applying complex systems frameworks. He has published more than 50 articles analysing complex adaptive systems phenomena including irrationality in human thinking, the origins of life, the sustainability of ecosystems and mitigation strategies during pandemics.

Tomas’ most frequently applied modelling frameworks are Chemical Organisation theory and Quantum Cognition. In the former he has proven mathematical results such as the decomposition theorem, the existence of quantum-like organisational structures and a framework to formalise resilience and goal-directedness. In the latter, he has developed methods to represent collections of concepts in a Hilbert Space, and has shown that various cognitive and language phenomena exhibit quantum structures. Tomas is also the founder and director of the Foundation for  Interdisciplinary Development of Science, Technology and Arts, a Chilean non-profit organisation that generates and disseminate interdisciplinary knowledge, and develops social impact projects.
