Cedric de Coning

Cedric de Coning is a Research Professor in the Peace, Conflict and Development Research Group at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), where he leads, amongst others, the Climate, Peace and Security Project.

His research covers conflict resolution, peace and conflict studies and international relations. Cedric has a PhD from the Department of Philosophy of the University of Stellenbosch (2012) and an M.A.(cum laude) in Conflict Management and Peace Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (2002). His research interests include drawing on complexity theory to deepen our understanding of how social-ecological systems adapt under pressure from climate change and other stressors. Recent books include ‘Adaptive Mediation and Conflict Resolution: Peace-making in Colombia, Mozambique, the Philippines and Syria’ (Palgrave MacMillan, 2022).

Cedric was formerly a South African diplomat and UN peacekeeper, and has served in various advisory roles for the African Union and United Nations, including on the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board for the UN Peacebuilding Fund.

He is the Principal Investigator for the XCEPT research project on learning from managing climate, peace and security risks in the borderlands of the West African Sahel Belt (CPS-WASahel).
